Amsterdam bucketlist

#Amsterdambucketlist: Begijnhof

Whenever I have guests visiting me from outside of Amsterdam I always insist on taking them here. Eventhough its probably in all the guidebooks it is still something special that I believe can not miss on the Amsterdam bucket list: Begijnhof! This little secluded courtyard is such a peaceful and quiet sanctuary in the middle of the city center. It was founded during the middle ages, but the buildings you can see there today are from the 17th and 18th century. The black wooden house at the beginning of the Begijnhof is one of the oldest houses in Amsterdam and dates back to 1528!

Back in the day Begijnhof was home to the beguine women which where catholic unmarried or widowed women. These days it is still home to women that choose to live alone. Because this sight is also private property it is only open to the public from 9 am till 5 pm and silence is requested.

Where can I find Begijnhof in Amsterdam?

Please see the map below for the exact location of Begijnhof. Just look for the brown wooden door with a small sign on it that reads Begijnhof.
