One day itinerary in Amsterdam

So unfortunately you only have one day in Amsterdam. If you still want to make the most of this precious day, here is an idea for an itinerary for one day in Amsterdam.

You´ll most likely start at Amsterdam Central Station. Because either you just came from Schiphol or a train. Walk outside and take in this beautiful building that was built between 1881 en 1891. With your back towards the central station go right towards de Noordermarkt http://www.noordermarkt-amsterdam.nl/en/). If you are here on a Monday you will find a cool secondhand market and if you are here on Saturday the food lover in you will go crazy for the biological food market that takes place. You are now in one the best neighborhoods of Amsterdam: de Jordaan. Sit down at Winkel43 for a cup of coffee and their famous Dutch apple pie, wander through the cozy streets of the Jordaan and do some shopping.

Make your way towards the Westermarkt. Here you will find the Anne Frank house, which is also recognizable by the long line of people that is always outside the building. If you want to go inside here is our ´secret´ tip to cut the line: order tickets online .

From Westermarkt tram number 13,14 or 17 will take you to Dam square. It’s the next stop after Westermarkt. Dam square is one of the biggest squares of Amsterdam and home to the Royal Palace, the National Monument and lots of pigeons. After seeing everything on the square and dodging pigeons go back to the stop where you came from and catch tram number 2 or 5.That beautiful building that you see is Magna Plaza a former postal office turned into a mall. Get off the tram at Museumplein. At this square (plein) you will find a few of the best museums in Amsterdam.  You can either go in a museum or just admire the beautiful buildings from the outside. Also you can get your  picture taken here with the Iamsterdam logo (Don’t’ lie it is on your Amsterdam bucket list no?).

Rain or shine, Vondelpark is a must on your one day in Amsterdam. From Museumplein you can easily walk there. Buy some food and drinks at the big Albert Heijn supermarket on Museumplein or go for lunch at Vondelpark3. On a nice day Vondelpark is great for wandering around or just sitting in the grass watching all kinds of people pass by.

After you have relaxed enough take tram number 1 back to Dam square. Walk towards the Damstraat to then take a left onto the Oudezijdse Voorburgwal: better known as the Red Light District. Its best if you come here around evening time. The later, the better to see it in it’s full ‘glory’. This is also a great area to get a typical Amsterdam snackbar dinner at Febo, a nice juicy burger at burger bar or perhaps some Asian food in the small Chinatown that Amsterdam has.

From here it’s only a stroll back to Central station to catch your train to wherever you’re off to.
